Now if someone had told me that one day I would have been considering camping to discover the country I would have nearly chocked on the idea, then laughed hard. Very hard.
I hate camping!
I hate anything that involves even just a remote possibility of being in contact with mud and insects. I can’t bear the idea of not having a proper bathroom. One that I would only share with my family.
I can’t bear the idea of being stuck under just fabric (even the most waterproof one) in a thunderstorm and even worse, with 2 young boys to entertain.
But then, THEN, one day I had the brilliant idea to nonchalantly say to Craig: “I don’t know why, but lately I have been thinking that camping could be fun for the boys…”
Actually what he heard is “shall we buy a tent RIGHT NOW and start exploring the whole of the UK like pioneers looking for gold and maybe we could even light fires?!”
This innocent sentence said outloud over dinner, the same way as I would have said “you know, I have seen the most gorgeous dress on ASOS…. Do you mind passing on the salt please?” seems to have completely turned around my future holiday plans.
I have a husband who is planning the size of the tent we should have (one with 3 rooms as we need space for bags), the equipment we MUST have (special lamps, stuff to heat the kettle, etc) and the sort of absolute requirement for the campsite (must welcome dogs and maybe even have a fish and chip restaurant on site).
As for me, inside I am wondering if I will ever be able to go through the process without needing a therapy following each trip, especially when I am surrounded by 3 smelly, excited boys believing that they turned explorers…
I have decided that as long as wifi is available on site then I am ready to compromise and lose the benefit of having MY OWN bathroom… But two nights maximum!

No, camping is wonderful! I love it!
Another site requirement for us is a pub
Most of the sites we’ve stopped on have had really great facilities, even those with the more basic facilities have all been really clean. Check out UKCampsite and read some reviews to get a better feel of the sites.
You can also get an electric hook-up (we have one for electric cool box, phone chargers etc) which makes things a little easier
It must be wonderful, so many people do it… I am not sure I am convinced yet, the outdoor life is not really for me I think, but will see
I think it says it all that my husband and the children are away camping and I am at home. I don’t like the bathroom arrangements either and I just can’t sleep under canvas. I tried it in my 20s and hated every second. Admittedly, it was a v small tent and I felt claustrophobic, but still. They have a great time wherever they go tho they tend to go to sites with v good facilities and the kids meet lots of other children and go off to play all the time.
Still not convinced tho – I like my sleep and I like my bed!
Oh what a GENIUS idea!! I might go and buy them a tent today and pack them all away this weekend! I like your style
Wait. Wifi? Hmmm…
definitely wifi or no camping!
Camping can be fun provided 1) it does not rain 2) the shower block/toilet is clean 3) you are in a gorgeous place by the sea or in the countryside 4) it’s only for two nights. Try it!
You see I am worried two of the most important of these conditions don’t meet expectation and that’s freaking me out (dirty bathrooms and rain)… maybe if I bring lots of wine the experience will be more pleasant!
I can only handle camping for 3 days MAX. After that I am not responsible for my actions. My husband knows this and would never ask more of me. He loves camping, but at least we both can agree that we need a shower! haha. We did a safari in South Africa and we chose the camping option because it was cheaper. Dear God I nearly died after the 3rd day and the bugs! Arggggg. But now I look back and it was amazing, but when we got back to the hotel that hot shower never felt so good!
