SHM Personal Styling – Dress your Jeans up or down

This month in our wardrobe basics series we’re going to turn our attention to the humble yet perennially cool ‘Indigo Jean’.

I can’t imagine there are many women who don’t own at least one pair of these old faithfuls and I’m sure there are many more who own a veritable gaggle of them (there is no word for a large group of jeans so I made that one up – if anyone has a better suggestion then please feel free to write in!)

So whether you have just the one pair or a whole wardrobe full – as always it’s important to know which cut best suits your body shape. Great pins will always look fab in a skinny leg, lean figures can carry of the boyfriend cut beautifully and a boot cut jean is the most universally flattering on most body shapes. In any wardrobe it’s always useful to have at least two different pairs of jeans, either in different shades of indigo or in different cuts. And it’s best to go with a pair with around 2% elsatane to 98% cotton to allow for movement and stretch in the fabric.

Ways to wear:

For a classic look – pair a lighter indigo Jean with a loose, sloppy joe type T-shirt, and either cowboy boots or a pair of Converse. Finish off with a rucksack type bag (trendy again) or a cross body bag to keep the look ultra relaxed. If the weather is a little on the chilly side then knot a sweater around your waist which will only add to the ‘street cool’ of the look. A great outfit for running around after the kids I find!

For a smart look – team a dark pair of Jeans (the darker the denim the more sophisticated the look), with a fitted shirt and blazer over the top. Finish with a great pair of boots and large tote bag and you’ve got an outfit that can take you from dropping the kids off at school to a lunch appointment with a client to drinks with the girls.
smart2Evening look – pair your jeans, with a glam eveningie top of your choosing and then accessorise to the hilt. Killer heels, cuff, drop earrings, choker. Jeans provide such a basic backdrop to this outfit so you can afford to go a little blingy with the accessories. Finish off with a cute clutch.
EveningSummer look – team your rolled up jeans with a simple vest top, a pair of flip flops or summer wedges, loop a pretty lightweight scarf round your neck and top with an oversized canvas bag and pretty accessorises. And then wait for the sun to come out!!
